Corymbia Ficifolia - Baby Orange

These Corymbia flowers are stunning. They are flowering gum trees, and they are popular in local gardens because of the gorgeous blooms, and also because they attract birds to the garden.  Other colours of this tree are pink or red - also stunning.

Christmas Bush

I found this little piece of Christmas bush, Ceratopetalum gummiferum on a walking trail not far from where I live. The cockatoos had broken off several pieces and left them lying on the ground. I spotted them and happily picked them up. Cockatoos like to bite things and can be very destructive to both vegetation and houses!  If I hadn't found a broken piece of this plant, I wouldn't have picked it.  Apart from it being illegal to gather wildflowers in NSW, picking flowers means that future seeds will not form, and there will be fewer plants growing in the future.  This can have severe consequences for a species, and in the past beautiful Australian wildflowers such as Christmas bells (Blandfordia nobilisand Mountain Devils (Lambertia Formosa) were nearly driven to extinction due to humans harvesting the flowers in the wild.

Flannel Flower

These velvety flannel flowers (Actinotus helianthi) grow in bushland near my home.  They seem to be unusually prolific this year - perhaps because of the rain. Flannel flowers belong to the Apiaceae plant family which also includes carrots and parsley.

Rain Soaked Purple Daisy

This African daisy looks good in the morning after some overnight rain.  There has been high rainfall in Sydney so far this January.  This is a welcome relief, as at the same time last year there was no rain and constant smoke from bushfires.

Pink Hydrangea

This lovely pink hydrangea in my garden always flowers around Christmas time, so I usually pick a bunch of the flowers for the table on Christmas Day.  Last year all the leaves were burnt from the intense summer heat, but we have had a cooler, wetter Summer this year in Sydney.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all. I thought I'd start posting flower photos again this year. After a long break, I just felt like it was time to return, and besides, after a year like 2020, I'm thinking that adding a little more beauty to the world wouldn't go amiss.  Today's flower is an apricot-orange coloured rose from my garden. It is is resting in a small blue glass bowl, on the coloured tiles of a coffee table, hence the coloured background. The tiles of the coffee table were hand fired in the 1960's by my late grandmother, who created enamelwork and pottery pieces. Please visit tomorrow - I have 4 more flowers for you this week!
