Flower of the Day - Spanish Lavender (Lavendula stoechus hybrid)

Flower of the Day - Spanish lavender
Energetic properties - settling, restoring and balancing

This variety of lavender has been hybridised to maximise its spectacular mauve "wings" or bracts. Quite a few of the flowers on this bush had multiple flower clusters and bracts.

Lavender has long been of my favourite flowers, and not surprisingly, lavender oil is also one of my favourites.  Lavender oil has been used traditionally as a remedy for sleeplessness, tension, nervousness and anxiety.  The best quality lavender oil is extracted from English lavender (Lavendula augustifolia).

Aromatherapy is also a natural way to reduce stress and increase wellbeing.  Lavender oil can also be used in combination with bergamot, geranium, lemon, orange and eucalyptus oils. For more uses of lavender oil and aromatherapy visit In Essence, an Australian company that specialises in pure essential oils.

Flower of the Day - Spanish Lavender (Lavendula stoechus)

Flower of the Day - Spanish lavender
Energetic properties - relaxing and calming

This type of lavender is often described incorrectly as French lavender, but is is origins are from Spain and the Mediterranean region. It's also known as bush lavender, Italian lavender, top lavender, topped lavender and wild lavender.

The purple tubular flowers are arranged in dense cylindrical clusters and the flowers are topped with up to five purple or violet bracts (modified leaves).

Spanish lavender thrives in dry conditions, which is great for gardens but not for the environment. Lavender stoechus is regarded as a significant environmental weed in Western Australia, parts of Victoria, and in South Australia, particularly the Clare Valley. There are now hybrid varieties available (such as Avonview) which are seedless and non invasive.

Indigo Flower of the Day - Viola

Flower of the day - Viola (also called Heartsease)
Energetic properties - increasing sensitivity & healing

"Purples" are interesting colours - including the bluish hued "indigo" and the more reddish "violet". These colours are at the longer wavelength end of the visible light spectrum, and are harder for human eyes to distinguish than, say, the greens in the mid spectrum.  I'm sure they are perceived differently, depending on one's colour vision. Anyway, to my eyes, (and on my computer!) this "purple" flower appears to be closer indigo than violet.
